Buying Your Labrador Retriever What Will It Cost?

January 27th, 2012 Tagged ,

There are many things to consider before bringing a Labrador retriever home, but the ongoing expense of care has to be at the top of your list. You know there are expenses when you bring a new baby home, but you don’t have a lot of choice but to count your pennies and make sure the baby gets the basics of care. You do have a choice when bringing home a dog! It is not fair to take one in if you cannot afford the basics of their care as well.

Adoption Fees can add up quick. If you want a purebred Labrador retriever, you will have to pay a reasonable price to purchase the puppy. If you want to pay less, you can look for labs that need homes from local shelters and animal rescue groups. You can find purebred labs through shelters and rescues, but you can also find a variety of mix breeds.

The most expensive way to adopt a Labrador retriever is to visit a local pet store or go to a local breeder. If you want to save a dog that needs a home and spend less on adoption fees, visit a local shelter. Some rescues can be expensive, and many shelter dogs will lose their lives if they are not adopted. Watch your shelter dog for temperament and health problems before rescuing them, but there are many healthy labs in shelters waiting for adoption. This includes purebreds! A very cost effective place to purchase a Lab is from Atlanta chocolate Labrador Retriever puppies

Vet Care can be expensive. You will need to book a veterinary appointment for your dog very soon after bringing them home. This goes for adult labs as well as puppies. If you are concerned about being able to afford a spay or neuter and all of the shots required, consider adopting from a local rescue group. Most rescues will have all of their dogs updated on shots, and will often cover the spay or neuter as well. This can take your initial vet expenses down significantly.

If you end up adopting through a shelter, you can find dogs that have already been spayed or neutered. Many shelters will give out a voucher to cover the spay or neuter, and many operate shot clinics that will take those expenses down considerably. Even if you do not adopt from a shelter, you may be able to use these shot clinics to save money.

Training Your Dog is important to consider. You will need to properly train your Labrador retriever so they can easily blend into your family and understand your expectations. The best option is to take them to dog training classes, but you can also hire a private trainer to come into your home. At the very least, purchase a good book that details methods for training your

Food and Toys are not to be forgotten. You can feed your dog bagged or canned food, or make fresh food for them at home. Your dog will also need a bed and toys, and potentially a cage or outdoor dog lot. A dog house may be needed as well.

You also have to consider the potential for emergency vet bills. Some dogs end up having health conditions just like humans. Other dogs may have accidents that need emergency attention. You can take out pet insurance if you are worried about covering these vet bills, which can be quite expensive.

Selecting The Perfect Dog Breed for Your Life Situation

January 26th, 2012 Tagged , , , , ,

Choosing a dog breed is, quite literally, a life changing decision. Make the wrong choice now and you could be setting yourself up for a world of trouble later on.

It is vitally important that you pick a breed that matches your circumstances and lifestyle. How do you decide? Well you can start by thinking about the factors laid out below;

1.What is the size of your property?

While a huge property is not absolutely necessary to keep a dog, it should be obvious that certain dogs need more space than others. Keeping a highly energetic dog, like an Airedale, or a Weimaraner, confined to a small apartment is just asking for trouble. You’ll very soon end up with a dog that is highly strung, destructive, and a real handful.

If you have limited space choose a more laid back breed instead. But remember, all dogs need at least some outdoor time, and regular exercise.

2. How much time can you spend with your dog?

As a dog owner you take on the responsibility for the well-being of your pet. Among other things, this includes daily walks and exercise. How long should they be exercised for? Well for most dogs, an hour per day will be sufficient. However, some breeds, particularly those from the herding, sporting and working groups, need even more than that. You’re looking at 2-3 hours per day to keep them satisfied.

Ask yourself whether you’re prepared to commit that time every day? If not, then maybe a more laid back dog is more your speed.Aside from exercise, you’ll also have to make time for training, which all dogs need. Some, like German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, and Labradors are quick and easy to train. Others, Beagles and Dachshunds for example, are known to be a difficult.

3. How Active Are You?

If you’re an active person, an outdoor type, or have an outdoor job where you can involve your dog, you may want a dog to match your energy levels. Best choices are from the working and herding groups, but be warned, these guys don’t just like to work, they absolutely demand it.

A slightly less demanding dog, but one that still has high energy levels, would be a Lab, Golden Retriever or another from the gun dog group.

4. Do you have kids? How old are they?

It should be obvious that if you have children, you’ll want a dog that is good with children. There are some obvious candidates here, like Labs are Golden Retrievers, who are renowned for their balanced, sweet temperaments.

There are lots of other kid-friendly breeds, many of which may surprise you. Boxers, for example are known to be excellent with children. Some breeds though, are not ideal around small children. Many toy breeds have a tendency to snap if provoked, while a large boisterous dog can easily knock a child over.

{Choosing a dog is an important decision and one that will impact on your life for the next 10-15 years. It is therefore advisable to make an informed decision. The questions above will get you started.|Choosing a dog is a big decision. What you do now will affect your life for the next 10 years and more, so choose wisely. Bernese Mountain Dog Breed Facts

January 25th, 2012 Tagged , ,

The Bernese Mountain Dog originated in Switzerland, and is named after the Swiss capital city, Berne.

These were originally farm dogs, a task they were ideally suited to given that they are non-aggressive to other animals and excel at a number of tasks. They were often used to pull heavy carts, but were also effective at herding and guarding livestock. Surprisingly, given their friendly nature, the Romans also used them as dogs of war.

The Berner Sennehund, as it is known in its native land, first came to America in 1926 and achieved AKC status in 1937.

The Bernese is a striking dog with a distinctive tri-color coat, which is mainly black and has white and rust markings on the chest and the face. The lower legs are also rust in color, with white paws. As you’d expect from a dog bred to survive in the mountains, the coat is thick, and the fluffy tail and folded ears provide additional protection from the cold.

These are loyal, devoted and gentle pets who are exceptionally good with children and also get on well with other dogs and with non-canine pets. The Bernese is renowned for its happy disposition and kind nature.

The Bernese loves to play so they are an excellent choice for an active family with children and / or other dogs. Their balanced temperament makes them adaptable to most living arrangements as they genuinely get along with everyone.

In terms of grooming, the Bernese is a relatively high maintenance dog. That thick coat sheds quite heavily, especially in the spring, so you’ll have to brush the dog daily if you want to keep your home free of dog hair. When grooming your Bernese you should pay special attention to the ears, as they are prone to infection.

Bernese, unfortunately, have a very short lifespan, with a median 6-8 years. They are particularly prone to canine cancers, and also commonly suffer from a number of other serious health issues. Musculoskeletal ailments, like arthritis, hip dysplasia, and cruciate ligament rupture, are a particular problem with this breed. They are also prone eye and ear problems.

As with many large dogs, the Bernese can develop into a first class couch potato if it is allowed to. But the breed actually enjoys activity and is particularly fond of walking. You may even consider training your Bernese to pull a cart, as they were once bred to do.

The Bernese is a joy to have around. These gentle giants have a wonderfully balanced temperament which makes them, loving, loyal and affectionate pets. They are intelligent dogs, but not the easiest to train because they regard everything as a game. You can use that to your advantage by keeping training sessions short and positive and using games as a reward. As most Bernese owners will tell you, they never grow up and retain their puppy exuberance throughout.

If you’re looking for a name for your Bernese Mountain Dog, the best advice is to visit a dog names, website. The one that I recommend is Puppy Names HQ, which has a huge database of excellent dog names including 1000s of female dog names.

Akbash Breed Focus

January 24th, 2012 Tagged , ,

A native of western Turkey, the Akbash is a large flock guardian that stands up to 24 inches at the shoulder and can weigh up to 140 pounds. They are athletic dogs, but also possess strength and power making them ideally suited to their work. It has often been said that the possess the strength of a mastiff and the speed of a sighthound, a formidable combination.

The Akbash coat is smooth, short to medium in length and is always white, although there may be light biscuit coloration on the ears. The coat has a distinctive mane around the neck, to protect the dog from predators.

The Akbash breed is believed to be at least 3000 years old and may be much older than even that. In fact, archeological evidence suggests that similar dogs were used as sheep guardians by the ancient peoples of Turkey as long ago as 8000 BC.

The Akbash is similar to other giant livestock protection dogs from around the world including the Great Pyrenees, Kuvasz and Komondor. They are natural protective, with an independent nature and intelligence that allows them to work without human supervision.

The breed does not currently have AKC accreditation, although it is recognized by the United Kennel Club.

Naturally brave, loyal and intelligent, the Akbash is an exceptional guard dog, and a loving family companion. Although they are primarily working dogs, they can make good pets due to their affectionate nature. They also have a particular love of children. Training and socialization are advised with this breed because they are naturally wary of strangers.

Training an Akbash can be a challenge because, although intelligent, they will not carry out a command simply because you say so. They are independent thinkers, and like to make their own decisions. Sensitive handling, positive training and firm leadership will get the most out of this dog, and it is therefore better suited to an experienced dog owner.

Finding a name for your Akbash can be a challenge. If you’re stuck, my recommendation is Puppy Names HQ, a site with a huge database of dog names, including lots of boy dog names, to choose from.

Grooming your Akbash is a relatively simple business. A brush down every other day is all that is really needed. The dog should not be bathed unless absolutely necessary as bathing depletes natural oils in the coat.

These are robust, healthy dogs who typically live 10 to 12 years. They suffer from few of the diseases that typically occur in purebred dogs. The biggest concern in hip dysplasia, a common concern with large dog breeds.

Quite obviously a dog this large, and this active, is not suited to living in an apartment. At the very least you’ll need a large garden, but the Akbash will be happiest in the country, and would prefer to have a job to do.

Overcoming Dog Behavior Problems With Training

January 23rd, 2012 Tagged , ,

Although dog behavior problems can be troublesome, there’s a training tactic for any difficulty you might encounter. Don’t simply accept behavior problems as part of life when you own a dog. Keep in mind that dog trainers have come up with some very sophisticated techniques, and these are more than sufficient to deal with whatever problem you might be having right now.

Many dogs have a habit that’s very unpleasant for owners to observe -stool eating. Many dogs will eat the feces of other animals, and eating from cat liter boxes in the house is quite common. Medical issues can sometimes cause dogs to do this, especially if they have parasites within their system. The problem is that even healthy dogs do this, so the only thing he really can do is keep cleaning up any feces in your yard or in the litter box on a regular basis.

There are some manufacturers that actually make a product that can be placed on feces that will make it taste bad to the dog which will fix the problem. You could also muzzle your dog so that when you take them out for a walk, they are not able to do this.

Sometimes dog fighting can be an issue that can cause problems for you. This could be a dominance issue, were simply a challenge that is indicative of their pack-like nature as a breed. Walking your dog so that they can get exercise, you can help them not fight when they go out. When walking, be sure to keep a safe distance between your dog and all other dogs that are walking by. Dogs get into the habit of meeting one another on the street. It is their nature. By keeping your dog from other dogs, fighting will be kept to a minimum. By preventing your dog from pulling you on the leash, and using one when you go out, things should be just fine.

Never let your dog beg! This is a very bad habit that should be avoided at all costs. What often happens is dogs will learn to beg because their owners find it cute and feed them when they do it. This, of course, only encourages the behavior. In the long run, giving dogs what they want sends the message that they are in control, not you. Obesity in dogs is very common, especially when this particular type of habit is encouraged on a regular basis. It’s never a good idea to feed a dog scraps from the table. The best thing to do is never feed your dog while humans are eating so that this habit is maintained.

Your dog is very special to you, so you need to get the right training tactics to help them with their behavior problems. You can’t just get upset at your dog for whatever they are doing. They will not understand what you are talking about. Learning how to train your dog is not that hard because of the abundance of information on the topic today. To cure your dog of their behavioral problems, you need to find a solution as quickly as possible.

There is a lot more that is critical to your knowledge about dog training tips and even on personalized dog collars, and that is what we are about to serve up to you, right away. Research is time intensive and hard, but we think we have found the very best as you will soon discover. It is through no fault of your own, but if you have not read through a lot about it, then you do need to be cautious.

Cairn Terrier Breed Profile

January 22nd, 2012 Tagged , ,

Feisty, intelligent and loyal, the Cairn Terrier is a dog with lots of personality. Think Toto from the Wizard of Oz and you have a picture of the typical Cairn, both in looks and character.

The Cairn is a native of Scotland and has been around since the 1500’s. They were originally bred for fox hunting and rodent control. The name “Cairn” refers to narrow gaps between rocks, and the breed was particularly adept at squeezing through these gaps to kill rats. These days Cairns are more commonly seen as companion dogs.

These sturdy little terriers are typically 10-13 inches tall and can weigh up to 18 pounds. They are short-legged, with strong hindquarters. The face is fox-like and the ears are erect and pointed. The coat is rough and shaggy, and may be cream, wheaten, red, sandy, gray, or brindle in color.

These dogs are full of character and are known to be alert, inquisitive and mischievous. They are also generally loving, outgoing and friendly, and make excellent family pets. They are good with older kids but not really suited to young children. You will also have to watch them around non-canine pets as they can be aggressive and still have a strong prey drive.

Cairns are very clever dogs. They are generally easy to train and enjoy learning to perform tricks. They are sensitive though, so you’ll need to focus on positive reward-based methods if you want to see results. The females tend to be more independent than the males and are therefore slightly more of a challenge to train.

This is a very agile breed and this, coupled with their intelligence, makes them very good at many canine sports. They excel at agility, flyball and advanced obedience trials.

These are robust, healthy dogs, but they do suffer from a number of congenital diseases. Cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, and entropion are all known to occur, while the breed is also known to be particularly sensitive to flea bites. Median lifespan for Cairn terrier is between 12 and 15 years.

Grooming is an easy business involving nothing more that a brush down every second day or so. The skin and undercoat are quite sensitive, so you will need to brush softly and carefully. You should also take care to trim the hair around the eyes. Bathing is not really required by can be done if necessary – just not too often.

While a Cairn Terrier will live happily in an apartment, it will need to get out for exercise every day. A daily walk is an absolute must, while a game of fetch or tag will always be appreciated.

Finding good puppy names, for a Cairn Terrier can be a challenge. Your best bet is to use an online dog names database like Puppy Names HQ, which has literally thousands of excellent dog names, including a mega-list of girl dog names.

Dog Vomiting: What All Dog Guardians Should Know

January 21st, 2012 Tagged , , ,

Throwing up is a natural behavior for dogs. Many of them do it all the time, and for any number of reasons.

So before you get yourself into a blind panic and rush off to the vet, stop for a while! There’s probably nothing to worry about. Throwing up is just your dog’s natural way of clearing something from his system.

Of course, I’m not suggesting that you ignore it completely, because sometimes vomiting does suggest a more serious problem. But you’ll need to observe the dog for other symptoms, for example, If the vomiting is accompanied by diarrhea, loss of appetite and general listlessness.

If these symptoms accompany the vomiting then the safest course is to take your dog to the vet. Most likely though, the problem will be something minor.

Here are some common reasons why your dog may be vomiting;

Eating too much or too fast – Let’s face it, some dogs eat as if they’re afraid their food bowl is about to sprout wings and fly away! If this describes your dog, then feeding him smaller, more frequent, meals may reduce the recurring instances of dog vomiting.

Consuming Grass – Nobody really knows why dogs eat grass, but many of them seem to love it. Some experts believe they eat grass to induce vomiting, while others say that eating too much grass makes them vomit. Either way, eating grass often makes a dog throw up.

Eating the wrong things – Dogs that are fed on junk food and table scraps, and dogs that make a habit of raiding the trash can, are always likely to throw up. A healthy diet and preventing access to the trash will sort this out straight away.

When should I be worried?

Although vomiting is usually nothing serious, it should not be ignored completely. An isolated instance is okay, but if you notice your dog vomiting more than once a day, make an appointment with your vet.

Also be alert for the symptoms I mentioned earlier, lethargy, lack of appetite, and diarrhea, as well as other signs, like blood, or unusual coloration in the vomit. In these instances, get the dog to the vet right away.

Vomiting may also be due to a more serious cause, for example your dog may have eaten a household poison, like a pesticide, or even a poisonous plant. If you think this may be the case then immediate veterinary treatment is called for.

How To Stop Your Dog From Vomiting

If you have a dog that throws up on a regular basis, there are a number of commonsense measures that you can put in place to reduce it.

Start by feeding your dog a healthy diet. Cut out all table scraps and junk foods and ensure that your dog cannot get into the trashcan. Feed your dog more frequent, smaller meals and add a fiber supplement, so the dog is less inclined to eat grass.

These steps should be enough to reduce dog vomiting, but if not, it is advisable to speak to your vet.
